It's a crazy world out there

I had never previously considered having a dog that was a companion and a "protection dog" until recently. Not to get too personal, I'd just like to say that harassment that is unprovoked and ongoing is not okay. It is not right in this day to be afraid to walk out of your own home when you haven't done anything. That said (I may remove this post later), I'm looking at getting a second dog to protect myself and my family, which includes Indy. Indy is a great companion dog, but she loves everyone and isn't a good "guard dog". I know that probably, not everyone agrees with me about having a "protection dog". I don't think I agreed with it in the past, but things can happen in your life that change everything. I don't like feeling like I have to watch my back for my own safety and Indy's if I go for a walk. That's just ridiculous. Anyhow, life got a bit rocked this past weekend, and I haven't been out much at all, so posting might be a little light this week as I try to get my life back to a level of normalcy.

Jeez, I hope your day gets better! Psycho neighbors? And I thought I had it bad living off West Burnside... though the only people who ever pester me are intoxicated homeless people. And it's usually more propositioning than pestering. :)

OMG, I hope that everything is OK. Get a German Shepherd, they could be quite protective.

    I hope everything is okay...

I definitely understand wanting a protective dog.
I like to walk/jog in the morning(usually when it's still dark)and I take my dog with me for company. She will let me know when other people are close. But she is so darn friendly, I can't imagine her ever attacking anyone(even in self defense). So I still carry a cell phone with me...just in case.

Ditto the german shephard. They are sweet dogs, but they use them as the K9 dogs for a good reason ;o)

Hoep you are ok! (and the fam)

I hope you feel better, Myra.

I can totally relate to what you're going through because I always preferred living in rougher neighborhoods in the past... I even had to beat up a guy who tried to mug me once (wouldn't recommend). I definitely agree with the other people who have commented, German Shepherds are very family-friendly and very protective. They always keep an eye out for you, but they're not menacing... they are well-behaved and wonderful with kids.

I hope you take your mind off of this and enjoy the rest of your week.

    All the best, L

scary! :( hope you are OK! that is not cool at all! I'm sorry to hear you are going through this! :( Billy and I actually got robbed in January (bye bye wedding ring!) and I know how it feels to no longer feel safe in your own home! Hope you find some peace!

we have a rottweiler and she's beautiful, strong, and extremely loyal. Oh, did I mention rotties make great guard dogs? my friend's house was being broken into and the dog watched the burglar break the window. Didn't bark at all, didn't move- he literally waited until the person got inside the house to bite him. That might be a bit intimidating- instead of scaring the guy off, he wanted to wait and attack him. good lukc finding a dog! I love my rottweiler to death.

So sorry about that! Lots of dogs can be great for protection... I would just recommend checking out your local SPCA or breed-specific rescue organizations before going to a breeder. So many loving dogs need good homes!
